Adding strawberries to your routine
With the days getting longer and the temperatures rising I am starting to think about our small strawberry patch that will eagerly be tended by my youngest daughter. Although we only ever get a few berries each year, there is nothing quite as luscious as a sun kissed berry straight off the plant. It’s no surprise that the strawberry is the most popular fruit in the world.
They are a nutritional superstar! Just one cup of strawberries contains approximately 100 mg of vitamin C which represents almost 150 percent of your daily recommended intake. They are a natural source for reducing the chances of heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers as they are high in fiber, folate, potassium and jam-packed with anti-oxidants. (no pun intended)
Did you know….
- that strawberries aren’t even really a fruit? They are actually a member of the rose family?
- that the average strawberry has approximately 200 seeds and that it is the only “fruit” that has it’s seeds on the outside?
- that if you are fortunate to find a “double”strawberry, legend has it that if you split it and share it with someone that you will fall deeply in love with each other?
Start the summer off right and add some strawberries to your routine! I know I will be.
